While Northumberland is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, there’s something magical about a spring stay amongst its captivating coastlines, beautiful scenery and historical landmarks that is simply unforgettable.

For your luxury self-catering stay in Northumberland this spring, we have created the ultimate itinerary, providing you with a range of different activities to try, locations to explore and experiences to enjoy. There really is something for everyone.

Day 1: Arrival

However long you’ve been travelling, it’s always good to stretch your legs and, once you have made yourself home in your beautiful suite, why not explore one of the best walks in Northumberland?

Hadrian’s Wall Path

While it provides you with a fascinating insight into Roman history, Hadrian’s Wall also spoils you with 84 miles of iconic landscape to walk across. This allows you to choose the length of your trail, with shorter strolls and longer adventures available for you to enjoy.

Allen Banks and Staward Gorge

A truly rewarding walk along the River Allen will see you take in beautiful woodlands before you emerge at the impressive Staward Gorge. A wonderful opportunity to explore the flora and fauna of Northumberland.

Kielder Lakeside Way

Full of open-air art pieces and regular haunts of ospreys, red squirrels and other wildlife, this waterside route is located within the world-famous Kielder Forest and features a dam and castle en route.

Bamburgh Castle to Seahouses

This coastal route is one of the best walks in Northumberland. Breathtaking views of the castle, which has featured in several Hollywood films, and the Farne Islands are just some of the highlights of this walk, which allows you to explore the picturesque fishing village of Seahouses and enjoy fresh seafood. As this walk is a short drive away from Chesters Stables, it might be better to keep this as a day out later on in your staycation.

Day 2: Exploring local towns and cities

Our location means a whole host of hidden gems are close by, just waiting to be discovered. Your luxury self-catering stay in Northumberland can be one full of charm, as our local towns boast tea shops, historic markets and a host of museums and art galleries.

Hexham

From visiting the Old Gaol and admiring stunning architecture to spending time in picturesque parks, there are plenty of things to do in Hexham that the whole family can enjoy.

Corbridge

Quaint, with traditional shops situated beside independent cafes and historic pubs, Corbridge is a real hidden gem in the heart of Northumberland. Aydon castle offers a beautiful place for a relaxing stroll, making it the ideal place for a spring day out.

Newcastle upon Tyne

Less than an hour away from your tranquil stable suite lies the bustling hub of activity that is Newcastle upon Tyne. Home to a range of bars, shops, restaurants, museums, theatres and a passionate football club, Newcastle is a city that needs to be experienced to be believed.

Day 3: Discovering historical landmarks

A Northumberland staycation cannot be complete without exploring some of its historical highlights. Even some parts of your itinerary have already touched upon landmarks steeped in heritage.

Vindolanda and Chesters Roman Fort

Just a short walk away from Chesters Stables, these two Roman archaeological sites provide a breathtaking glimpse into Northumberland’s history. While Vindolanda offers you the chance to view their very own Writing Tablets, Chesters Roman Fort prides itself in being the most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain, complete with well-preserved baths, steam room and officer’s quarters.

Belsay Hall, Castles and Garden

Whatever the weather, this Grade I listed building allows every member of the family to explore and discover rare trees of medieval wall paintings, while the Quarry Garden boasts a whole range of exotic plants to find out about.

Day 4: Departure

Depending on what time you are planning on leave, your stay can end with a morning of bliss, as you unwind before beginning your journey.

Nearby Matfen Hall offers restaurants and lounges to dine in, a tranquil spa to unwind in, impressive golf courses on which to play and – should you be looking to extend your Northumberland adventure further – beautiful bedrooms to stay in.
