A Day In Corbridge

Cobbled streets strung with lights, independent shops round every corner and a history dating back to the Romans; the village of Corbridge may be small, but it’s a true treasure trove of delights for all ages.

Morning – Arrive in time to beat the bustle at Grants, a local favourite for cakes, scones and the most exquisite pastries this side of Paris. Take a seat in the Market Place to enjoy your treats, watch the world go by and admire the village’s 1,350-year-old Saxon church, complete with a Roman arch pinched from the nearby settlement.

Afternoon – Take a leisurely stroll around the shops to find a souvenir before striking out for a family adventure. Head over the bridge and take a sunny (and flat) walk to watch swifts wheeling and diving along the river. Stay in the village and follow the signs to Corbridge Roman Town – once the most northerly town of the empire and now a visitor attraction, complete with museum, family activities and an audio trail that brings the ruins vividly to life.

Don’t Miss — Little ones looking to burn off some energy? Just outside the village, Brocksbushes Farm has you covered. Spend summer afternoons strawberry picking before letting them loose in the play barn while you enjoy a well-earned coffee.

A Day In Hexham

A Northumbrian market town with basketfuls of charm, Hexham is the place for adults to pick up a few local delicacies and for kids to pick up a day of summer fun.

Morning – Home to a regular farmers’ market, Saturdays are the perfect time for a trip down the valley to Hexham. Get in early to sample and select Northumbrian treats, from nettle cheese and heather honey to artisan bread and locally brewed beers. The market is watched over by Hexham Abbey, originally built in AD 674 it’s still open to the public  – if you’re feeling brave, venture into its ancient crypt for some ghost spotting!

Afternoon – Summer is the time for play, head down to Tyne Green Country Park for an icecream and time in the adventure play park. Or dive into Wentworth Leisure Centre where you can choose from swimming, bowling and soft play – or enjoy them all!  For lunch, the town serves up something for everyone, stop in to Little Mexico to choose a spice-level to suit every palate, or soak up the sun, smoothies and exceptionally cheesy toasties in The Garden Room’s courtyard.

Don’t Miss –  If the weather isn’t on your side, or you’re on the look-out for an evening out with the family – Hexham is ideal. Independent cinema, The Forum shows all the latest releases and the Queen’s Hall theatre has a jam-packed summer programme of family shows.

A Day On Hadrian’s Wall

When you stay at Chesters Stables, you quite literally can’t miss Hadrian’s Wall. Just minutes from your door, it’s a must-do for any trip to Northumberland. Dating back to AD 122, it stretches the country from east to west and was once the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. And with 73 miles of trails to choose from, there’s a route to suit every kind of adventurer, from little to big.

Morning – Pack a picnic, lace up your boots and head for the trail. If your little ones aren’t so little and can manage steeper ups and downs, park up at Steel Rigg to follow the path to Sycamore Gap for spectacular views along this beloved section of the wall. If you’re looking for a route that’s easier on little legs, head to Housesteads – Britain’s most complete Roman fort and a great day out in its own right, it also leads to a comparatively short and gentle stretch of the wall, all within easy reach of a visitor centre with loos and those all-important ice creams.

Afternoon – Make your way back for a well-earned rest, but on the way, don’t forget to stop at Chesters Roman Fort. Just over the road from your Stable Suite, it’s the best-preserved cavalry fort in Britain and features a fun family trail to help you follow in the footsteps of legionaries. Then, it’s time to gently drift back to your suite to put your feet up for an evening of relaxation.

Don’t Miss – The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre houses the largest sections of the famous Sycamore Gap tree installed among benches that invite you to sit and reflect. And, when night falls, the nearby pub of Twice Brewed runs regular stargazing experiences, including Star Kids events so you can all explore the night skies together.

A Day In Kielder

The UK’s largest working forest, home to native wildlife and mile upon mile of walking and biking trails – Kielder is the place for a family adventure in summertime. And after all that exercise, what could be better than a spot of kayaking on Kielder Water to cool down?

Morning – The tranquil woodland of Kielder houses the UK’s largest network of off-road cycling, its Lakeside Way trail meandering along the shoreline of Kielder Water. Suitable for everything from rugged mountain bikes to first balance bikes, bring your own or rent from Kielder to venture out together, enjoying a morning immersed in nature and peace.

Afternoon – As well as biking trails, Kielder is a haven for native wildlife, including endangered red squirrels and osprey. Park up your bikes and take a seat in its lakeside hide to keep a keen eye out or hit the water on an Osprey Watching Cruise. If you’ve worked up an appetite, Kielder serves up a host of tearooms, bars and cafes – so you can find something to tempt even the most discerning little diners.

Don’t Miss – If biking isn’t your thing, just slide into some walking shoes and hit the trail for a day among the trees.  And for little walkers, the Room on the Broom route invites you to join witch’s magical adventure through the forest, complete with a trail pack and fun activities.

With Stable Suites accommodating between 2 and 8, pet friendly options and luxury touches at every turn, find the suite to suit your family for a summer you’ll never forget.
