Cracking adventures
Easter simply isn’t Easter with out a chocolate or two (or several more). The peaceful grounds of our stable suites offer nooks, crannies, hedgerows and tree roots for the Easter Bunny to stash a few sweet treats for little hands to discover. But if you’re out and about, Northumberland has a full basket of options.
Historic Wallington Hall is hosting a nature-inspired Easter Egg Hunt from the 14th to the 22nd of April. Follow a trail through the woodland grounds to leap like a lamb, hop like a hare, spring like a squirrel and claim your well-earned chocolate egg. Over in Gibside, from the 12th to the 22nd of April, families are invited to complete 10 activities along the trail, hunting for colourful eggs and competing in a hobby horse race to win their chocolate treat.
Bold adventurers are in luck, just across the road from your stable suite lies Chesters Roman Fort, where your Easter Adventure Quest begins! Enter the most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain to discover life as a Roman soldier, then explore the grounds, crack the clues and receive your Easter treat!
And on Easter Monday, the whole family can get involved in the annual Ford and Etal Duck Race. A hotly contested local event, at 11.30am on Monday, 21st April hundreds of rubber ducks are released into the river at Heatherslaw – each is numbered and those backing the winning duck will win a prize.
A walk (and hop) on the wild side
April is a fantastic time of year to meet the native wildlife here in Northumberland, as puffins return to the Farne islands, ospreys swoop back in to Kielder Forest and wild Cheviot goats, graze in the nearby Cheviot hills.
A sheepfarming county, Northumberland’s fields will be joyfully dotted with newborn lambs at Eastertime. And at Wheelbirks Parlour, little ones can meet and feed the farm’s baby lambs, feed free-range chickens and collect their eggs and get to know the resident Jersey cows and calves as well as Hamish and Dougie – Wheelbirks’ pair of loveable donkeys. Animal Hours will take place on dates throughout April, the perfect activity before a milkshake or ice-cream, made using the farm’s own Jersey milk.
Ramp up the excitement with a trip to Calvert Kielder at Kielder Forest and Water Park. With high ropes courses, zip lining, abseiling and a velcro Olympics obstacle course all on offer – it’s the perfect way to burn off some Easter Holiday energy and make brilliant new memories at the same time.
For a more gentle, but equally spectacular experience, follow the Pilgrim’s Way to Holy Island. Walk from the mainland and across the sandy causeway, following the poles and listening to hundreds of grey seals sing from the sandbanks, to reach the historic island of Lindisfarne. A tidal causeway, this walk requires timing and care, but a guided experience with Footsteps Northumberland will keep you safe and dry.
Starry starry nights
Tucked away in remote and unspoilt countryside, nestled at the gateway to Northumberland’s International Dark Sky Park – our stable suites offer a crystal clear view of the night skies. Simply wrap up warm, step outside and look up for an unforgettable sight.
If you’re visiting over the Easter holidays you’re in luck! From the 16th to the 25th of April the Lyrid Meteor Shower will be visible, providing a show of brightly glowing meteors shooting through the night sky – an excuse for a non-school-night late bedtime with hot chocolate by the fire afterwards. And, if you have some budding astronomers and astronauts among your party, nearby Kielder Observatory has a range of Space Kids events taking place throughout April, where young stargazers can search for stars, hunt for aliens and try the giant telescope.
However you spend your Easter holiday in Northumberland, our self-catering stables are your 5 star home from home, with space for up to 8, pet friendly options and every luxury comfort. Flop in front of the fire, gather around the table for an Easter feast and enjoy time together your way for an unforgettable country getaway.
