Explore our guide to February Half Term family activities in Northumberland to plan a holiday you’ll never forget.
Historic Half Term
Hadrian’s Wall
Northumberland’s icon and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall is just moments from your Stable Suite. 2000 years old and 80 miles long, lace up your boots to walk a section and take in panoramic views of wild moorland.
And just over the road from your suite is Chesters Roman Fort. Britain’s most complete Roman cavalry fort, it’s a great place for young historians to step back in time and imagine life as a hard-working soldier.
Bamburgh
Northumberland’s award-winning coastline is breathtaking at all times of the year, though you might need to wrap up warm for a bracing beach walk in February.
Head to Bamburgh Castle, home to 1,400 years of history and open all year round for little (and not so little) adventurers! In February, visitors can embark on the Uhthred of Bebbanburg Tour, learning about the castle’s Viking and Anglo Saxon history with guide Ragnar Lundgren – all finished with a royal crowning ceremony!
Fresh Air Fun
Wallington Hall
In February, the landscape is just beginning to come back to life, the days gradually lengthening, and the first green shoots appearing. And the gardens, woodlands, cycle trails, and play areas of Wallington Hall offer a safe, open and fun space for youngsters to explore the great outdoors. From the 14th to the 21st of February, you can follow a Snowdrop Festival Fairy Trail, discovering fairy doors and sweet flowers on a walking route through the East Woods.
Kielder Forest
Mile upon mile of accessible woodland trails make Kielder Forest the perfect choice if you’re looking for a spot of peace and quiet. Little ones will love the interactive Stick Man Trail, completing fun activities and learning about forest wildlife along the way. For bigger children the Lakeside Way and Borderline trail are ideal for young cyclists, and the woodland as a whole offer an exciting opportunity to spot elusive and endangered red squirrels and osprey.
Rainy Day Activities
Hexham
Your local market town while staying at Chesters Stables, an afternoon in Hexham will keep the whole family smiling. The Queen’s Hall Arts Centre has a regular programme of live theatre and entertainment, while the independent Forum Cinema shows all the latest releases alongside old favourites. And charming cobbled streets, independent shops and cafes invite you to browse and stop for a well-earned hot chocolate.
Whitehouse Farm Centre
A short drive away, Whitehouse Farm Centre will keep your little monsters occupied. Children can feed the farm’s animals, hop on board for a tractor ride, go wild on trampolines, go-karts and an adventure playground outside, or burn off energy at the Farmer’s Den soft play inside.
Newcastle Museums
The vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne is just half an hour away, and home to inspiring museums and science centres. The Great North Museum takes you from dinosaurs, Romans and ancient Egyptians to the wonders of outer space. In February, the Time Odyssey experience takes families on a journey through history. While at the Life science centre, rocket shows, experiment zones, making studios and live science shows are all planned for February Half Term.
However you spend your February Half Term holiday in Northumberland, our self-catering stables provide a cosy and luxurious space, welcoming you home each day.
