Step Back In Time
Home to over 70 castle sites, more than any other county in England, a visit to Northumberland is an invitation to travel back in time and experience thousands of years of history.
From ancient woodland and hilltop forts to coastal castles, every corner of our county offers a unique opportunity for your budding historians to learn all about life as a wild invading Viking, fierce Roman legionary or revolutionary Victorian.
A UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably the most famous spot in the North East, Hadrian’s Wall is just minutes away. And, just across the road from your stable suite, a short walk even for little legs, is Chesters Roman Fort. The most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain, this site and museum invites you to step into the sandals of a Roman soldier or centurion and find out what life was like on the wall.
And just up the valley is Belsay Hall. Built in the 1880s, this elegant home was built by Sir Charles Monck and is inspired by Greek and Italian architecture with truly magical grounds. Get outdoors to explore its untamed quarry gardens and medieval castle before storming the Wild Man adventure playground. From the 22nd February to the 2nd March, Half Term History Maker events will be taking place, inviting little visitors to meet characters from the past.
The Great Outdoors
In February the landscape is beginning to wake, fresh winds beckoning us back outdoors to stretch our legs and drink in the beauty of the landscape once more. Open your door to miles of walking trails, suitable for all ages, to burn off that pent-up energy. Kielder Water and Forest Park is a great option for families, with gentle waterside and woodland trails perfect for little adventurers. Get stuck into nature, literally, at Wallington Hall. A beautiful country estate, with fantastic play structures nestled in the grounds outside and a room dedicated to doll houses inside, Wallington is a picture perfect spot for a picture perfect day out. And from the 22nd Feb to the 2nd March, you can get hands on with Snowdrop Planting sessions, come along on the 2nd of March to craft a snowdrop crown and take your place in the Snowdrop Parade!
