As the summer comes to a gentle end, leaving new sand-speckled and sunkissed memories in its radiant wake, what better time to start planning your family October half-term break at Chesters Stables?

Autumn in Northumberland is a true enchantment, as the landscape roars into full, fiery colour and the inky-dark of our pristine night skies takes centre stage in the lengthening nights.

And inviting, relaxed and set in miles of peaceful countryside, Chesters Stables offer the perfect base for your family half term holiday. A luxurious home-from-home, there’s space for everyone (including the dog) to kick back and unwind their way.

Wake up to crisp, bright country mornings with days of adventuring stretching out ahead of you. There’s so much to see and do in Northumberland in the October half-term holidays, we’ve compiled a guide to help you plan the most unforgettable family getaway.

Take a Hike

From little legs to bold adventurers, Northumberland offers mile upon mile of welcoming and captivating walking trails. Beautiful at any time of year, our coastal, valley and moorland landscapes are particularly spectacular in autumn.

Explore our unspoilt coastlines to storm ancient castles at Dunstanbugh and Bamburgh. Take to the Cheviot hills to blow away the cobwebs. Or, stride alongside ancient Hadrian’s Wall, the Northumbrian landscape falling away on either side to reveal the same spectacular views enjoyed by Roman legionaries centuries ago.

Woodland Adventures

Nearby Kielder Water and Forest Park is a natural playground for all ages. Visit its red squirrel reserve, take to the water for a canoeing session or explore this vast and beautiful forest by bike.

There’s a host of exciting activities on offer from archery and tomahawk throwing to high rope courses and sea scooters.

Pumpkin Picking

It wouldn’t be autumn without a pumpkin or two! Head to Brocksbushes Farm to pick your own pumpkins, ready to take back and carve into your own family of jack o’ lanterns. With a play barn, artisan farm shop and courtyard kitchen, there’s enough to keep the whole family entertained.

Halloween Fun

Halloween falls during October Half Term, and if you’re feeling brave there are plenty of spooky treats to enjoy in Northumberland. Visit historic Belsay Hall to solve creepy clues around the halls and corridors of the estate before settling down to some spooky storytelling.

And head to Ford and Etal Estates to walk their famous and free Scarycrow Trail, complete with map and score sheet to mark your favourites!

Whichever spooky and seasonal and activities you enjoy during your October half-term holiday in Northumberland, our self-catering stables provide a warm and relaxing family bolthole to return to each day. Settle around the fire to relax and relive the day’s magic. With suites for groups of up to eight people, pet friendly accommodation and luxury extras – there’s everything you need to make your break truly unforgettable,
