Often voted as one of the happiest places to live in the UK, Hexham is also a wonderful place to visit as you enjoy a self-catering escape to Chesters Stables.

With picturesque parks, landmarks steeped in history and a host of artisanal shops, this award-winning market town provides days out and experiences that are truly memorable. Here we look at just some of our own personal favourite things to do in Hexham…

Discovering Hexham’s History

Watch history come to life at landmarks such as Hexham Abbey, which dates back to AD 674. Located in the heart of the town, this landmark is one of the oldest seats of Christianity in England and is one of the most visited attractions in the north east. Take the time to explore its Anglo-Saxon crypt and admire precious artefacts that span centuries.

History buffs can also enjoy a visit to Hexham Old Gaol and delve into its dungeon, where you can meet the gaoler and learn all about being imprisoned there. Built in 1330, the oldest purpose-built prison in England houses The Border History Library and offers an insightful day out for the family and begs the question…do you dare place yourself in the stocks?

Enjoy The Sport Of Kings

With events taking place throughout the year, Hexham Racecourse is the ideal places to enjoy an exhilarating day at the races while you stay at Chesters Stables. Put on your best togs for a memorable day out at Northumberland’s only racecourse and one described as ‘the most scenic in the UK.’

Soak Up Some Northumberland Culture

Hexham is home to some fantastic art galleries, including the Dennis Kilgallon Gallery, where sculptures can be admired in the hills, while film-lovers can visit Forum Cinema for a full programme of contemporary and classic movies. Queen’s Hall Art Centre, in the heart of the town centre, offers plays, live comedy and music, as well as workshops, talks and exhibitions for the whole family.

Enjoy Retail Therapy

With a bustling marketplace and artisanal business, it’s no wonder why shopping is one of our favourite things to do in Hexham.

Hexham’s market takes place in the town square every Tuesday and boasts a selection of independent stalls full of genuine Northumberland produce, while the shops include family-run bakeries, bookshops and boutiques. Uncover a hidden gem as you browse each and every establishment at your leisure.

Hexham is a genuine treasure trove of wonderful places to visit. Whether you’re in the mood for history, shopping, culture or all of the above, this quaint market town offers memorable days out and, lying just five miles from Chesters Stables, is the ideal introduction to Northumberland during your self-catering stay.
