In Northumberland, January brings beauty in balance. Our endurance of dark evenings and bitter mornings rewarded by moody skies shot with brilliant, copper pink and breathtaking open landscapes – quiet, peaceful and yours to explore.

The least populated National Park in the UK, Northumberland offers unparalleled tranquility and space to walk, discover and breathe in absolute peace. Take time for yourself this January with a countryside escape to our secluded stable suites, offering snug, serene luxury within striding distance of hidden gems, world-famous landmarks and picture perfect winter trails. So, hat, scarf and gloves at the ready – wrap up warm and discover our guide to the best January walks in Northumberland.

Bamburgh Castle

An Area of Outstanding Beauty in its own right, no trip to our northern county would be complete without a walk along its stunning coastline. One of Northumberland’s most beloved spots is Bamburgh Castle, and for good reason. Blow away any remaining festive cobwebs with a brisk and bracing beach walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh – a sandy 3 mile stroll flanked by wild, rolling seascapes and with an ancient, craggy castle glowering on the horizon. The castle itself is well worth a visit and is open on weekends only during January.

Penny Pie

Sweetly named and very appropriate for the charming, chocolate box village of Blanchland, this walk takes you from gentle riverbank to wild, sweeping moorland and back again. Park in the village and walk along the gentle River Derwent before beginning your climb up and out of the valley and into beautiful open moorland. Take in panoramic views and imagine cattle drovers making their windblown way along the track, stopping at Penny Pie House for a well-earned rest (and a pie). Dip back down through Slaley Woods and listen for grouse and native birdlife as you descend back into Blanchland to warm your feet by the fire at the Lord Crewe Arms.

Water’s Meet

Bring your wellies for a peaceful and flat trail that’s ideal for most types of walkers, Water’s Meet in Hexham will quiet any festive bustle with the rumbling calm of the riverside. Start at the Boatside Inn (worth a visit in its own right) and follow the public footpath down to the river for an easy 10 minute walk along to Water’s Meet – the point at which the waters of the South Tyne and North Tyne converge and cascade. The return leg take in views of pretty Warden Bridge as you make your way back for a restful drink.

Winshields Crags

A visit to Hadrian’s Wall is an absolute must at all times of the year. As winter strips the fields, the wild architecture of the landscape falls into beautiful relief – and a walk along Whinshield Crags and Cawfields will take you to the highest point on the wall to experience truly breathtaking views. Hiking boots at the ready, this walk will encompass some ups and downs as you follow the ancient trail. Starting from The Sill visitor centre follow the trail marked National Trails, Caw Gap to climb the whin sill ridge – formed from rock that was here 295 million years before Hadrian built his wall.
