Join our neighbours at Matfen Hall for a traditional Burns Night with all the trimmings, including a four-course Burns Night Dinner, address to the haggis and a ceilidh dance with live music accompaniment. Robin’s Lantern Quest- Wallington Hall’s gardens and grounds stay open all year round, with trails and guided walks for the grown-ups and spectacular playgrounds and forest fun for youngsters. Guided Walks – Our border county is truly spectacular in winter, and Northumberland National Park hosts a number of guided walks and experiences, inviting you to learn more about the natural history and ancient stories of the land beneath your feet. A circular walk from Alwinton on the 18th February rewards you with both wonderful views of the Cheviot hills and a taste of local history with sites of old illicit whisky stills. For nature-lovers, Dark Skies and Creatures of the Night on the 20th February is a nighttime winter safari complete with stargazing workshop. Find Out More
Yoga & Wellness Festival – A time of renewal and restoration, begin the new year relaxed and refreshed at Alnwick Gardens’ Earth and Essence Yoga and Wellness Festival. Set in the beautiful gardens, discover meditation, yoga, breath work, sound baths and more. Find Out More
Hexham Farmers’ Market – Wrap up warm and wander Hexham’s historic marketplace, watched over by the town’s ancient abbey and home to a regular Farmers’ Market offering local produce, treats and artisan gifts. As England’s northernmost county, Northumberland is no stranger to challenging weather. Each of our stable suites are self-catering, fitted with both modern amenities and a crackling stove – the perfect place to hunker down for a cosy, fireside afternoon. But if you’re keen to get out and about but the forecast isn’t looking good, there’s plenty to keep you occupied and entertained.
Theatre & Cinema – Your stable suite is just half an hour away from the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, home to the majestic Theatre Royal. In January and February, you can take your seat to enjoy local pantomime or dust off your dancing shoes for Mamma Mia! Looking for something a little closer to home? Hexham’s independent Forum Cinema shows all the latest releases, as well as National Theatre screenings and vintage classics.
History & Nature – Over winter, some of the region’s historic halls will close their doors. But ancient Bamburgh Castle is open all year round. Standing sentinel over the north east coastline for over 1,400 years it is a stronghold of local history and hosts regular events and workshops. And just a few miles from your suite, The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre is a permanent home to the largest section of the beloved Sycamore Gap tree and a fantastic way to discover Northumberland’s natural history in all weathers.
Family Fun – Travelling with little ones? Don’t worry, rain doesn’t have to stop play. Nearby Brocksbushes farm has a large play barn, open all-year-round, and with a farm shop and cafe for the grown-ups to enjoy some well-earned relaxation. Or drive to historic Alnwick for a well-spent afternoon at Barter Books. Set in the town’s old train station it is one of the largest second-hand book shops in Britain and a quirky and well-loved local gem.
