The Great Outdoors

Hadrian’s WallYou couldn’t be closer to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. An easy day out within easy reach of your Stable Suite, Hadrian’s Wall is truly spectacular. A range of routes means that every age and ability can walk sections of the 2000-year-old wall, marching in the footsteps of Roman soldiers and enjoying a pit-stop to discover even more history at nearby Chesters Roman Fort.

Kielder Forest – England’s largest working forest, Kielder ushers you into a world of peace and quiet. Mostly flat and easy to walk, follow its woodland routes on foot or by bike to spot endangered red squirrels or take part in the interactive Room On The Broom trail to keep little walkers entertained.

Walking Trails – Northumberland is home to England’s least populated and most peaceful National Park, and at Chesters Stables it’s at your doorstep – waiting to be discovered. Lace up your walking boots, pack a picnic and don’t forget your binoculars as the birdlife is truly beautiful!

 

Dive Into Watersports

By Sea – Looking to burn off some of that term time energy? Head to Northumberland’s coastline, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the spot for picture perfect beach days. Beadnell’s historic harbour offers watersports sessions including kitesurfing, paddle-boarding, surfing and coasteering. Take part together, or watch your little ones have fun from the comfort of the beach – ice cream in hand.

On Lakes – Peaceful and vast, Kielder Water is Europe’s largest man-made lake. Get out onto the water with canoeing, paddle boarding and kayaking sessions, or enjoy an Osprey Watching Cruise for something little more calm.

By Boat – In summer native wildlife takes to the skies and shores of Northumberland – with seals, puffins and even dolphins and whales enjoying the warmer summer seas. The best way to spot your favourites is by boat – take a trip to the Farne Islands, a nature reserve and home to a huge colony of nesting puffins.

 

Historic Adventures

Bamburgh Castle – Warrior or Pirate? That’s the choice this summer at Bamburgh Castle. Children can hunt for treasure and swashbuckle their way through the season at Ahoy Academy Pirate School. Or, they can become a true viking at Warrior School – complete with foam swords and blood-curdling battle cries!

Ford & Etal – A hidden gem, the Ford & Etal Estate has something for everyone. From trips on the Heatherslaw Light Railway to canoeing, pottery, alpaca trekking and more – plan a day out you’ll never forget.

Belsay Hall – Travel back to the medieval period this July at Belsay Hall as their Knights’ Tournament gallops into action. Watch armoured knights battle it out over a series of gruelling and daring challenges.

 

Northumbrian Fun

Country Shows – In our peaceful corner of the countryside, summer brings country shows in abundance. Watch horse jumping, fell running and falconry, meet native cows and sheep, browse tents of home-baked local produce and enjoy all the fun of the with traditional rides and family fun.  Shows in the local area include Slaley Show on the 8th of August, Falstone Border Shepherd’s Show on the 22nd of August and Bellingham Show on the 29th of August.

Strawberry Picking – Sunripe and ready to enjoy, head to Brocksbushes Farm to get your hands dirty and your baskets full with an afternoon of strawberry picking. Enjoy time in the sunshine and a well-earned sweet treat in its courtyard kitchen before heading back to your Stable Suite to tuck into your bounty in comfort.
